Castle Valley Species Project

In 2003, five acres of land located in southeastern Utah were nearly entirely occupied by just one non-native species: cheatgrass. This plot had been part of a cattle ranch decades earlier. The new residents began clearing small islands free of cheatgrass, and the natural balance slowly returned. The stories that follow are brief peeks into the lives of twenty species that now call these five acres home. Some were planted, and others traveled on their own to this land.

Map displays native ranges for the species written about below. The gold star pinpoints 270 Pope Lane, Castle Valley, Utah.
